Naughton’s Nonsense

"May those who love us, love us.
For those who don't, may God turn their hearts.
And if he cannot turn their hearts.
May he turn their ankles
so we may know them by their limping."

-Irish Proverb (author unknown)

The other cheek?

In my previous post below I talked a little about a problem I had with a client. And recently Joel Wilson asked what it means to be a man. Well in light of these to posts I want to know what it means to be a man and turn the other cheek? After contemplating my situation, I began to wonder if I turned the other cheek or if I did something in between that and punching the guy, by just being calm and blowing him off. I want to hear from everybody not just the Orthodox, what does it means to be a man and turn the other cheek, you can answer one or both parts, and I want to hear the ladies chime in also. Because I feel like I do not really know.

    Shoulda punched him. ;)

No, I think you did the right thing. It takes a man to remain calm in a situation like that. Well done.

Christopher, I think it is terribly difficult to understand just how radical are the Lord’s instructions in the Sermon on the Mount. I think recognizing that your response is not quite “turning the other cheek” is perceptive. However, I agree with Joel (Thomas) that you did the right thing. You showed yourself to be civil in spite of aggressive incivility and rudeness; it may not be “turning the other cheek,” exactly, but it was certainly appropriate in every sense.
