| Silly church signs can make you think | |||||

I have always found the little sayings churches put on there signs trite, silly and a number of other things. Becoming Orthodox has only increased that feeling. But ever once in awhile I run across a sign that still has those characteristics but makes me go huh that is pretty funny and ironic. The most recent of which was on the sign of an Assemblies of God church, which read: “WRONG IS ALWAYS WRONG, EVEN IF EVERYBODY ELSE IS DOING IT” This little quote sent my mind reeling in a thousand directions, I felt like my mind was a smooth piece of glass and that had been shattered and the trails of thought were the break patterns. Not that this was any huge revelation, but the humorous irony of it all. I say this because of all the conversations I have had recently about the problem with western culture, its influence on the church, and even how orthodoxy in the U.S. is so liberal by the rest of the orthodox worlds standards. In fact I am finding it hard to admit that right now I am liberal by orthodox standards. I want to be on the conservative side of things but it is going to take much prayer, fasting, and work, because to be conservative orthodox is completely counter- american culture in every aspect of one’s life even down to the most intimate details. And as much as I hate to admit it I a also very much a product of this culture. At first I see a sign like that and want to point out how they in that very church are not living up to the classical christian standard, but I soon realize I cannot do that without bring up my own complete failures at sainthood. Forget sainthood, I have enough trouble being a simple faithful lay person at my local parish. So I laugh and remember how far I have to go on my own journey. |

Happy 4th of July! This is a special weekend in the history of this country, it is the time we come together to celebrate our independence and show patriotism. However it always puts a sore spot on me when I see people celebrating and being patriotic while ignorantly desecrating the flag. For a little over a year now I have been running sound for a band called The Bats (short for old bats or Beautiful and talented sirens). The core of the group is five women over the age of forty ( a bat member requirement). Three of the women are the main vocalists, singing about men, food, shopping, break-ups, and dating with the occasional jazz and pop standard. They also have a group of dance numbers the do. The fourth and fifth women play guitar and bass, sing background vocals and occasionally sing lead. The band is backed up by three guys playing drums, guitar and keyboard. enough of that. This band is a great nights entertainment. They are funny, witty and great entertainers. I think that everybody should come and see a show at least once. Our regular venues are Natasha’s, Portofino’s and Furlongs. We seem to have gathered a little of a following so all the shows require a reservation and cover charge. The cover charge varies from venue to venue. Anyway all that was said so that I could announce a few gigs:

Well I decided even though I never blog it was time to update to WordPress. I was sick and tired of getting spammed in my comments section, which is why I went ahead and launched it without being totally complete. I am going for essentially the same boring look, with a few tweaks that will hopefully take some of the boredom out of it. I am also hoping to add some new features such as an events calendar which would feature public events that the company I work for is involved with. I am also hoping to add a section that features the current fast and/or feast of the Orthodox Church, and a link to more information about the fast/feast at the Orthodox Church in America’s website. These features, however, depend on how well I can rope some friends of mine into helping me implement them. I hope that this will help get me blogging some more, but I am not making any promises.
